The reason the boom gates were stuck at Maddox Road and diversion are in place to Champion Road (oh the irony!)…
Last night about 6:30pm a small part of the Maddox Rd railway crossing failed, so the boom gates remained down. At 11:30pm the boom gates were still down and the gates were down this morning.
Apparently an axle counter is broken, a replacement was sought from Geelong, but apparently one has to come from Adelaide now, who knows…….
Wonder how much the new part, delivery and installation will cost? Add that to the soon to be $370M plus for the new rail over at Maddox and the permanent removal of Champion Road!
Ok riddle me this Champions...

Victoria's Big Build, Level Crossing Removal Project Melissa Horne MP, Danny Pearson MP for Essendon, Jacinta Allan you really do know how to treat the inner west with contempt don’t you. Us inner westies are basically all going to be having our own little lockdown party for the whole of summer as we wont be able to go anywhere. I suppose the saving grace will be that it will be a hot summer so no massive downpours of rain to flood Douglas Parade, Melbourne Road and Mason Street. But if it does, we have one road….. one road to get to and from other suburbs…. The one you want to close: Champion Road
Tim Pallas enjoy retirement from your home in Williamstown where you can now sit back and relax whilst inner west residents try and navigate the closure of three (3) inbound ramps to get us to the city and beyond.
Why oh why is money being spent on a level crossing removal that the community knows is going to cause so many issues for businesses, families and the community at large due to the lack of design and community consultation with residents and local council?
Tim Pallas you are a local, you know only too well what the closing and diversion of traffic is going to mean to the community, the community you live in.
Instead of saying:
“We can pretend that this is all capable of being done within the existing revenue base of the state.”
And
"Or we can be honest with people and not make lame excuses when their livelihoods and their wellbeing are at stake."
Stop spending money where it is not needed, particularly not needed right now.
Here are some photos from last night’s hoon activity on Maddox Road. This is the same road the Victorian Government plans to redirect cars, pedestrians, and cyclists to after permanently closing Champion Road in 2026.
During the two Nine.com.au news segments about the closure last night, the Level Crossing Removal Project spokesperson claimed Champion Road had to close due to the stabling yard and oil pipes. However, the community knows—and has repeatedly asked—that no feasibility study has been conducted on these claims. In fact, the oil pipe owners have confirmed to the Hobsons Bay City Council and Keep Champion Road Open that the pipes can be moved.
As for the stabling yard, it’s worth noting that all other stabling yards are located at the end of their respective train lines. Newport, however, is not at the end of this train line.
We've warned the government that this decision will lead to serious safety risks—potentially costing lives—but they just won’t listen. Why?
Here is the footage from our live cross with the Today Show on December 12th. Thank you to all those who came out in support.
