Jacinta Allan Melissa Horne MP Gabrielle Williams MP Hobsons Bay City Council Level Crossing Removal Project Tim Watts MP
Why aren’t we inviting the Opposition?
We get asked this a lot, so here’s the honest answer:
We haven’t formally invited the Opposition to our events. They already know what’s happening here. Many have walked these roads with us in the past and publicly stated they oppose this project.
Both Melissa Horne MP and Tim Watts MP have publicly declared their opposition to this project. That matters. It shows that even some within both state and federal government understand how wrong this is.
But the reality is—who actually has the power to stop it?
Right now, the Victorian Government holds that power. And the buck stops with Jacinta Allan, the Premier. She has the authority to step in and stop this project—but so far, the government has made it clear they plan to push ahead and complete it by 2026.
That’s why our focus is on those in government today. They’re the ones who can make the decision to stop it.
This isn’t about party politics. It’s about protecting our community, our history, and our future.
"Keep Champion Road Open" is a community initiative based in in the inner west of Melbourne, advocating against the permanent closure of the Champion Road level crossing without any safe and viable alternative. The Victorian Government announced their intentions in October 2022 to close this crossing as part of its broader level crossing removal projects, proposing that vehicles use nearby Maddox Road instead. In response, local residents and business owners have formed this group to oppose the closure, citing concerns over increased traffic congestion, safety, and the lack of comprehensive community consultation.
The government's plan includes constructing a grade-separated pedestrian crossing at Champion Road and extending Akuna Drive to connect Champion Road to Maddox Road, aiming to maintain connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists.
The "Keep Champion Road Open" group emphasises the importance of thorough feasibility studies and genuine community engagement before making such significant infrastructure changes. They have organised petitions, engaged with local media, and encouraged residents to contact their local Members of Parliament to express their concerns over the past two years.
The committee of Keep Champion Road Open Group is categorically not affiliated with ANY political party or group, and is made up of residents and business owners who do not support the closure of this permanent crossing of Champion Road at the crossing without community consultation and feasibility studies having been conducted.
We need to rely on the skills of our community to offer assistance in media and communications, letterbox drops, sending emails and letters to MPs, printing, photography videography and editing AND engineering advice.
